True or False: Herbal Supplements Lower High BP Naturally?
True or False: Herbal Supplements Lower High BP Naturally?

Are there any herbal remedies for high blood pressure?

First, let’s take a look at the history of herbal medicine – the original pharmaceutical industry.

For most of human history, people relied upon herbal remedies to cure illness. To this day, indigenous people around the world primarily use the plants around them as a natural pharmacy.

In Western countries, people have largely become disconnected from the natural world. We have been taught to believe that only ‘man-made’ substances can have true curative properties.

The truth of the matter is that nearly all of todays synthetic medications are based on natural molecules derived from plants.

“Practically all of the most widely used drugs have an herbal origin. The number one over the counter medication, aspirin, is a synthetic version of a compound found in the willow tree. Many statins are based on fungi; and Tamiflu originated from Chinese star anise,” says senior pharmacist Catherine Ulbricht of Massachusetts General Hospital.

If man-made medicines are simply based on natural molecules, how could so many of them cause so much harm?

There are two main reasons:

First, the natural curative properties found in plants tend to be from numerous molecules acting together. For example, there might be one key “active agent” molecule, with ten or more additional similar but different “support” molecules that help out.

Drug companies will find the single main “active agent”, isolate it, concentrate it, and only use that one molecule for the medication.

Without the bonus “helper molecules,” and because of the unnaturally high concentration of the active agent, the drug will often have a very different effect on the body than the original natural herb it was derived from.

The second key reason is that most man-made medicines are inspired by the original plant-based molecule, but drug companies then modify the original molecule in an attempt to ‘one-up’ nature. The pharmaceutical manufacturers will take the original plant derived molecule, isolate it, concentrate it, and then, for example, add an extra oxygen or nitrogen atom here and there to change it ever so slightly.

The result is a drug molecule that can have negative side-effects that are completely different than the original natural plant-based source.

If the original, plant-derived compounds already work, why would the drug companies bother making man-made changes?

One of the main reasons is that you can’t get a patent on a naturally occurring herb. Simply discovering a new plant species in the rain forest doesn’t mean you “own” it. An easy way to create something that can be copy-protected is to isolate a single active compound in the herb, change it a little, and call it your own.

It all comes down to money. When you take a natural molecule, tweak it, get a patent on it, give it a catchy name and add a massive marketing budget, fortunes stand to be made.

“Isolating and synthesizing a single molecule allows a drug company to patent that molecule. Making slight chemical modifications allows further patent potential. Such exclusivity can be worth billions, whereas a whole plant offers little opportunity for profit.

Dr. Andrew Weil

The main reason for why the big pharmaceutical companies ignore and belittle herbal remedies is because there’s no way they can own and control them – and therefore there’s no profit in making them. If they can’t own the production rights and corner the market, they’re not interested.

The unfortunate result of this situation is man-made “single molecule” drugs often have efficacy rates that are far less than their natural “full spectrum” precursors, plus they often have side-effects that are far worse than the condition they are designed to treat.

As just one recent example amongst countless others, it’s estimated that around 64,000 people died from Vioxx. Please keep in mind that Vioxx was made by the “reputable” manufacturer Merck, was put through years of clinical trials before release on the market, and was of course FDA approved.

And 64,000 people still died.

Now let’s contrast that number with herbal remedies. From 1989 to 2004, the FDA said it had received 260 reports of deaths associated with all herbal remedies combined.

Of course even 260 is still 260 too many.

Which brings us to the next point:

The 3 Golden Rules for Herbal Remedy Safety:
  • Herbal remedies are natural, and often have far fewer side-effects, but they need to be given just as much respect as man-made drugs. Especially if you’re on other medications, it’s best to let your doctor know so they can be aware of any potential reactions and track your results.
  • Never buy from any merchant that doesn’t have a solid reputation and insist upon an unconditional, 100% money back return policy.
  • Just like with man-made drugs, results will vary from person to person.  You can’t know if something will work for you until you give it a try. For a man-made drug to get FDA approval, it only needs to be better than 50% effective compared to a placebo. Likewise with herbal remedies, some will work for some people, others won’t.

If you follow these golden rules, it’s tough to go wrong with herbal remedies.

Which brings us back to the main question. Are there any herbal remedies for high blood pressure?

The answer is, yes, there are numerous herbal remedies that many people have found to be very effective for treating high blood pressure.

With that said, now let’s take a look at one of the most popular herbal remedies for natural blood pressure control: High-Rite.

High-Rite is a 100% herbal supplement. The four main ingredients are a mix of: hawthorn, passion flower, guelder rose bark, and ginkgo biloba

When these four compounds are taken together, many people report reduced blood pressure results that are in line with many common BP drugs.  As another line of defense toward natural blood pressure control, it’s worth a try.

Here at Low BP Drug Free, we believe making science-based, data-driven health decisions.
We believe that natural solutions should be the first line of defense, with synthetic alternatives being a second-tier last resort only when all scientifically valid natural solutions have failed.

We aren’t “anti-drug,” we’re simply “pro nature first.”

We encourage you to apply the scientific method:
Test, listen to your body, track your results, be open and honest about what works
for you and what doesn’t, and find the best solution for your needs
(not the needs of the drug industry, or for that matter the herbal remedy industry).
